Sam Spratt

Sam Spratt is an American artist that graduated from SCAD in 2010 with a BFA in illustration. Soon after he graduated, he worked many jobs where he was incredibly under-payed, sometimes taking a measly twenty dollars per drawing. Within the last couple of years he has been commissioned for top companies and magazines such as Game Informer, Gizmodo, MSNBC, FX, Warner Bros., and more. He has also done illustrations in the music industry with contributions to labels and artists such as EMI, Mike Snow, Foxy Shazam, Wiz Khalifa, and Childish Gambino. However, his most recent popular commission was for National Geographic‘s Killing Kennedy, where he depicted an intense and emotional portrait of the late president and his wife.

Most importantly, though, Sam Spratt is well-known for his openness to not only create works of his own, but also in urging others to keep the creativity alive in themselves. He is one of my favorite artists because he isn’t so conceited to believe that he is the best out there, but he isn’t such a push-over that he undermines his own work. He is proud of what he does and acknowledges that there are artists out there who are better than he, yet he also refuses to accept it. He is a man that strives for constant improvement and that is what puts him at the top of my list.

On a more technical note, as you can clearly see in the images below, Spratt utilizes color in a way that most only wish they could.
