‘Eli Sudbrack’, Skyler Mitchell, 2D Design

From the moment I had seen one of his paintings, I became infatuated by his projects. Eli Sudbrack is a famous artist who formed a group with Christophe Hamaide-Pierson called assume vivid astro focus (avaf) which was formed in 2001. Most of his art that interests me the most are his pieces used to define and express spontaneity and concentration. These illustrations offer a lot of contrast and pattern to keep the eyes moving and the brain working. They are extremely vivid and colorful with their patterns, offering the imagination a large foundation to explore and piece together into an understandable image.

His art seems to have a way to draw you in for long periods of time. Despite his works having little to nothing to do with anxiety, and more to do with attention and creativity, I found myself thinking about my own desire of expression in art. I began to think about my own anxiety and how it related to his art. The colors, pattern, diversity, randomness, and even shapes all led up to my own anxiety and my own feelings. Once I realized how hard his art hit me, I began to look more into him and his art. Strenuous to the eye just how anxiety is strenuous to the body and mind. For most of his art he uses paints of all sorts ranging from acrylic to oils. He also will use canvas to plywood to base walls. He can be very adventurous and use mixed media all the time for his larger projects. One day he will be carving a sculpture to then paint it his signature vibrant and bright colors, while the next day he will be stuck to canvas with that of a simple brush and a black hole of ideas racing in his mind. As I had stated earlier, I found myself attached to his art revolving around concentration. However, the meaning of his pieces can vary by quite a large margin. Just as his art is, his ideas and inspirations for his pieces are also mixed and sometimes out of the ordinary. It can range from the transsexual community and their struggles, AIDS activist groups, to even the Original Hulk.

Well known for his collaboration at the Suzanne Geiss Company in New York City, May 7–June 21, 2014, Sudbrack created a large room full of his amazingly intricate artworks. Ranging from canvas to wall to expression to sexual discrimination, this room best describes his interests and beliefs.

Having made many other large rooms or buildings, Eli has been widely known all throughout with celebrities and models who helped collaborate with many of his projects. An example being Lady Gaga. It has become very clear to me that Eli is an amazing and extremely intricate person with a unique way of showing his interests and beliefs. A way that despite not meaning too, can remind or explain other events that people face such as anxiety. I have developed a mad respect for this artist and hope to take what I see and create my own unique art to express my own opinions and beliefs through color and pattern.
