Reading Response – Lauren Coffey

Personally, I found this section on auto-destructive/creative art and movement to be interesting. In a way, it reminds me of the Dada movement. The sole purpose of it is to show that art is not just a painting or a sculpture, but something that can change.

The last bit of On Random Activity in Material/Transforming Works of Art (1964) under Manifesto World (1962) almost describes the creative process of Jackson Pollock. It begins to explain that the work begins to take over the artist themselves, and what they produce is beyond their control. When the artist is not zoned out in such a way, it would be nearly impossible to create the same pieces. Occasionally, I produce paintings that have this same concept behind it. As it is stated in the last sentence of this section, “…which the artist could not achieve except through random activity”. Pollock’s work and the pieces I produce in such a state of mind are nothing but random activity.

This particular reading assignment had me intrigued because such a large part of it focused on movement in art, and how art cannot be one solid term. Art is incredibly fluid and diverse, and this section shows that very well.
