Banksy

Banksy is a very well known artist based in the United Kingdom and is best known for his graffiti. It would be easy to sum up his work as just graffiti, but then one would lose out on all the meaning and depth. Banksy, like many other graffiti artists, stumbled upon a new form of art. Not too long ago, the general public thought of graffiti as vandalism. It was (and still is) illegal. However, in more recent years (with much thanks to Banksy) graffiti has become a sort of fine art. It  is illegal and is usually done without the permission of the owner of the property. This is why Banksy must remain a mystery. He can’t reveal himself or he’ll be charged with numerous counts of graffiti.

Recently, Banksy has come under fire because of the pretentious city of New York that somehow thinks they should go on a Spider-Man-esque witch hunt trying to catch him, unmasking all these years of mystery and grandeur. Instead of being thankful and respecting the work of a well known, almost glorified artist, some chose to paint or scribble over the great pieces of art.

Banksy often uses a combination of depressing images with somewhat funny captions/concepts (dark humor).

Most of Banksy’s work is very satirical and contains ample political and social commentary

The thing that draws me to Banksy is his anonymity. I mean, theoretically, there could be many Banksys. If he passes on to another life, one could easily take over his legacy and continue to do graffiti until the end of time.
