Square?

The reading for this week was a good read. I did not have to read the assigned readings such as previous readings. Environmental installations are some of my favorites for several reasons, but most of all because they are available to most and this type of art becomes part of the environment. My favorite is “The Spiral Jetty” by Robert Smithson.  It seems so majestic and beautiful.

Edward Kienholz article I like very much.  He says that he will never “insult this country (America) as I love it perhaps even as will as you”.  When critic comes from people that love us and respect us it has credibility.   I like the fact that he takes the time to say that he loves this country and he knows that it needs change and improvement.  I do not understand all of the art works he describes therefore I do not know if I agree with his art or points of views. I do agree with his point of view that “our moral/ethical posture is not so shining that we should weight other cultures with it”. In my opinion, in he is right on the money.

The Lightning Field was too technical for me and long. On the other hand Walter De Maria was easy to understand and talk about the thing that we do every day they are meaning less but at the same time they are important and significant. I have to agree with the artist that meaning less work should be done in privet. Otherwise it becomes entertainment to others. I did not understand the last sentence.  When the artist says that meaningless work is the new way to tell who is square. What’s a square?

I hope that next week’s readings are as enjoyable as these weeks.
