Paul Lung and Photo Realism/ mariah cushing

Paul Lung is a Hong-Kong based artist that is most well known for his hyper-realistic pencil drawings. It is estimated that he spends 60 hours or more on each of these extremely detailed drawings. He uses a .5 mm mechanical pencil to sketch everything from portraits to cats. His passion and dedication is clear in each of his drawings. It’s hard to tell they are even drawings because the likeness to real live figures is so accurate.

The above pictures are of Paul Lung’s beloved cat. He mostly enjoys doing these drawings of his pet because he feels that this subject is intimate to him and extremely dynamic. He is very right. It is amazing how real his drawings look and the fact that all he uses is a mechanical pencil is even more amazing. The fur on the cat is so dynamic. His use of value is incredible and really creates the 3D look of the cat’s fur. His use of value also can be seen through texture in his drawings. The use of texture is so prominent and accurate. It makes you know that the cat is soft and fluffy. HIs drawings are easy and interesting to look at because the realism makes them easy to identify with. Paul Lung captures each and every hair on the cat. His eye for detail and precision is uncanny. Paul Lung also does portraits of his friends and family that are equally amazing.

Lung’s portraits capture an equal likeness of the human form and expression. Again, his use of value in the graphite pencil creates a wide range of textures that add up to create these extremely real drawings. His use of value and light and dark also creates depth in his drawings. All of lungs works are graphite drawings but the figures seem 3D. He achieves this through amazing use of value and the concept of light and dark. As he does in his cat drawings, Lung captures every hair and every stitch on every inch of these portraits. Hyper realism requires insane amounts of attention to detail. It requires layer after layer of pencil. These drawings clearly demonstrate control, patience, and an amazing eye for detail and realism.

I chose Paul Lung for my similar taste for pencil drawings. I also prefer black and white when drawing and i prefer graphite drawing to any other media in art. I also chose Paul Lung because he has elements in his drawings that I can learn from and aspire to. His sense of control is very evident. He captures every single detail. He takes his time. He uses a light hand when needed and a heavy hand in other areas. Lung’s control in all of his drawings is the overall tactic he uses to create such amazing hyper realism. It is a talent i hope to achieve by observing how control can create such detail.
