Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate techniques for using colored pencils.  Students will demonstrate various blending techniques and accurate color theory while also accurately capturing and illustrating the landscape.

Materials:
Prismacolor Pencils (not Verithin or the Scholar ones)
Sketchbook
1 Sheet of Bristol or Illustration Board

Time:
2 Class Periods

Process:
Using your sketchbook, work out several interesting compositions.  I would do these in color so that you can focus on elements in the landscape that really work because of their color.  Look for naturally occurring color theories such as analogous, complementary and split complementary.

Once you have worked out your compositions, draw the best one on your sheet of bristol board.  Pay close attention to how the colored pencils work when you draw them on top of each other.  If you need to create a shadow don’t use black, use that color’s complement.  If you need to create brown, don’t use the brown straight from the box.  Create brown by blending together complements such as yellow and violet.  What happens if you add red next to a green leaf?  Play with colors!  Enhance them.  Don’t just record exactly what you see.
